Master Teacher on Faculty
Dance Expressions’ Ballet Mistress
Ms. Warren’s background has been primarily in classical ballet in
the Kirov (Russian) tradition. At the age of 11 she was offered an
apprenticeship with the Denver Ballet. After moving to Texas, at the
age of 13 she was accepted into Ballet Theatre on the Bay. Ms. Warren
was offered an apprenticeship to the San Francisco Ballet Company, an
annual full scholarship to Joffery Ballet in New York and American
Ballet Theatre’s summer school.
Ms. Warren joined the faculty of Houston Dance Center where she
received a full scholarship to classes. HDC was the home of Ballet
Festival, USA, which was a small touring company of 16 members. Ms.
Warren rose to the rank of principal ballerina within months of joining
the company. During her tenure with Ballet Festival, she also
participated in Young Audiences, a groundbreaking organization that
offered the arts to Harris and Galveston County schools. In a two-year
period, this group performed over 268 performances of “Peter and
the Wolf”. This organization is still going strong today.
Among many of her distinguished roles, she has performed as the Sugar
Plum Fairy in “ The Nutcracker”; Kitri in “Don
Quixote”; Maria Taglioni in “Pas de Quatre”; Aurora
in “Sleeping Beauty”; The Dying Swan” Live at Lincoln
for PBS and Bob Fosse’s “All That Jazz”. In addition,
Ms. Warren was in Bob Fosse’s tour of “Chicago”. Some
of her other favorite performances included Firebird, Graduation Ball,
La Bayadere, Les Patineurs, Les Sylphides, Paquita, Raymonda
Variations, and Serenade. She toured these ballets all through the
United States, Canada, Hong Kong and Mexico City.
Some of her teachers include the legendary Anatole Vilzak; Alexander
Minz, Mme. Alexandra Danilova, Mme. Valentina Periyaslovic, and Royce
Fernandez, all of American Ballet Theatre; Nicholas and Anne Polojenko
of Ballet Festival and currently with Florida Youth Ballet; Robert
Joffery of Joffery Ballet; Robert Barnett of Atlanta Ballet; Mary
Therea Gushurst, Delia Stewart, James Clouser and Bob Fosse.
Ms. Warren has over 30 years of professional dance training, over 20
years of teaching experience and over 25 years of professional
performing experience.
Mary Niles Warren was the director of her own studio for 15
years. She instructed all levels and ages in Ballet, Jazz and
Character. Many of her students have joined companies across the United
States, such as Boston Ballet, Pacific Northwest, Ballet West, San
Francisco Ballet and Ballet Austin. Several of her students have been
accepted to summer camps at Houston Ballet, Ballet Austin and Joffery
Ballet for the past several summers. Ms. Warren was also Artistic
director and choreographer for Act I Dance Ensemble. The Ensemble
included in it’s performing year, 25 to 30 community service
projects such as Aides Benefit, Nursing Homes, kids at Risk,
scholarships to families of the Sunshine Foundation (The Foundation
sponsors families dealing with a child who has cancer). Included in Ms.
Warren’s teaching curriculum is working with ADHD, deaf or
mentally challenged students.
In addition, Ms. Warren has toured the Southwest, East Coast and
Mid-West as Ballet Mistress to the Energy Source Dance. She is also a
judge for the competition circuit.
Ms. Warren’s personal Mission Statement is to teach and build
well-trained dancers that can think not only in ballet terms, but apply
it to handle life with confidence and self-esteem. She also believes in
the Old World “Russian” discipline. This builds beauty and
balance, safely giving the dancers a long dance life and a good
foundation for discipline in all aspects of their life.
